The Stissing Center
The Stissing Center, located in Pine Plains, New York, is a certified performance space of the New York Theatre Organ Society. This space is a prime location for Theatre Organ programs to flourish, featuring an intimate seating arrangement, vibrant acoustics, and diverse programming opportunities in the Hudson Valley Region.
The early 1900s was the golden age of silent film. Grand movie palaces dotted the landscape offering patrons an elite style of entertainment at an affordable price. In the beginning, films were accompanied by either a simple piano or a full orchestra. Robert Hope-Jones took the classical pipe organ and made it into something that would be attractive to theatre operators looking to reduce the cost of a full orchestra or upgrade a piano soundtrack. Enter the Theatre Organ, an expansive pipe organ capturing the full range of a symphony orchestra while adding sound effects to accentuate the actions seen on screen. Everything from the lush strings of a romantic kiss to the galloping of horses giving chase to a robbery performed by one organist with a dynamic tonal pallet at his fingertips.

In the fall of 2020, the New York Theatre Organ Society (NYTOS), with the support of generous donors, purchased a lightly used Allen digital theatre organ with its sights set on The Stissing Center. This is a unique instrument as it contains both theatre organ voices and those found in a classical pipe organ expanding the possibilities of repertoire. Its range can be from thunderous and intense to soft and melancholy. Tossing in a few percussion instruments and sound effects, this theatre Organ is ready for anything. The stylish horseshoe console makes for a stunning centerpiece in the acoustically rich hall. Unlike a traditional pipe organ, this instrument uses speakers that are carefully hidden within the architecture of the space. The theatre organ was inaugurated in the fall of 2021 with a star-studded event; Bach to Queen and everything in between.
